Books and pamphlets, 1850-1899

  • 100% Completed

The largest project in this campaign, these printed materials from 1850 to 1899 provide context for the lead up to the Civil War and its aftermath. Texts range from roiling speeches and persuasive tracts to reports and statistics. Topics covered include abolition, emancipation, slave rebellions, the Dred Scott decision, voting rights, the underground railroad, education, the Freedmen’s Bureau, land distribution, and even cooking. One highlight is the cookbook “What Mrs. Fisher knows about old southern cooking, soups, pickles, preserves, etc.,” by Abby Fisher, which is believed to be the second published cookbook by an African American woman.
