Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas, 1935 June-August

During the summer of 1935, Alan Lomax, Zora Neale Hurston and Mary Elizabeth Barnicle made audio recordings of music, song, dance, and a church sermon along the southeast coast of the United States and in the Bahamas. The trip was the first Library of Congress project to focus exclusively on the African diaspora. Lomax's correspondence from this summer provides a glimpse of what would become his life-long passion: the intersection of diaspora and culture.
