Composer, conductor, teacher, and social activist, Leonard Bernstein, defined much of American music for the second half of the Twentieth Century. He composed the music for symphonies, ballets, chamber works, operas, a film score, a Mass, and several Broadway musicals, notably Candide and West Side Story. He conducted dozens of orchestras internationally, including the New York Philharmonic over 40 seasons, with 11 years as its music director.
He practically invented musical education on television, particularly with his influential 53 Young People’s Concerts. Here you’ll find rich correspondence among significant colleagues, family, and friends, and fascinating writings, starting with his student days at Harvard.
