Orchestras

Bernstein conducted dozens of orchestras over his career, but there were several where his association ran particularly long and deep, starting with the Boston Symphony (where he conducted during 30 seasons) and its off-shoot, Tanglewood, where he taught and performed for over 50 years. Bernstein conducted the Vienna (Wiener) Philharmonic over 24 seasons. But there’s no orchestra with which he was more closely associated that the New York Philharmonic, where he became its music director, and later Laureate Conductor, over 40 seasons, conducting 939 concerts, more than any other conductor in its history.
