Henry Browne Blackwell: Subject File

  • 100% Completed
Enthusiastic reformer Henry Browne Blackwell corresponded with many of the leaders in both the women’s rights and the abolition movements as well as many of his Blackwell family members, including his sisters in the medical profession, Elizabeth Blackwell and Emily Blackwell. Henry supported the women’s suffrage movement by founding the American Woman Suffrage Association with his wife, Lucy Stone, and others. His papers also include extensive financial records as well as autobiographical sketches. Handwritten autobiographical material is accompanied by transcripts made by his only daughter, Alice Stone Blackwell.

Henry Browne Blackwell’s subject file contains financial papers, including account books related to the unsuccessful Maine Sugarbeet Company. Following in his father Samuel Blackwell’s footsteps, the company was an attempt to find alternative to sugar cane, a crop associated with slave labor, and one example of Blackwell’s many business dealings and investments.
