Mary Ann Ball Bickerdyke (1817-1901), a Civil War nurse and agent for the United States Sanitary Commission, was known as “Mother Bickerdyke” to Union soldiers. Bickerdyke later worked as an attorney, assisting veterans with pension claims. Bickerdyke’s family correspondence contains letters from the Ball and Bickerdyke families, including letters between Bickerdyke and her sons, James and Hiram; her husband, Robert; and various cousins, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
