Trial of the Lincoln Conspirators and Legal Subjects
As the judge advocate general of the U.S. Army, Joseph Holt was intimately involved with the military commission that tried the suspected conspirators in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In addition to general correspondence Holt received related to the trial, his papers contain materials with direct bearing on the conspiracy investigation and trial, including correspondence, copies of statements and depositions, and drafts of the charges. This section also contains miscellaneous documents on other legal matters, such as speeches to juries and communications to newspapers.
