Represented defense in Hurd et al. v. The Railroad Bridge Company case, which pit the owner of the "Effie Afton" against the owners of a bridge spanning the Mississippi River. Represented defense in People v. Armstrong, famous for Lincoln's successful use of an almanac to discredit eyewitness testimony against Jack Armstrong in murder trial June 16,1858 delivered "House Divided" speech at Illinois Republican Convention. 1858 engaged in a series of debates with Stephen A. Douglas, the Democratic candidate for the United States Senate. The Lincoln-Douglas Debates and subsequent publication of the text of the debates increased Lincoln's national reputation. Lincoln loses senatorial election in Illinois, but nominated Republican candidate in presidential election.
