1863: Civil War, Emancipation Proclamation, and Gettysburg Address
Issued Final Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Union victories at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, and Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4. November 19, delivered Gettysburg Address at cemetery dedication in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. December 8th, issued Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction, which established lenient terms for former Confederates wishing to rejoin the Union.
