1. Correspondence, 1925-1952

John Lomax and Alan Lomax administered the Archive of American-Folk Song, now the American Folklife Center archive, from 1933 through 1942. In doing so, they generated nearly 3,000 pieces of correspondence that comprise the heart of this collection. The correspondence provides an intimate dive into the activities of the archive and into the Lomaxes’ personal lives. There are five major sections:

  • John A. Lomax, 1933-1952
  • Lomax Family, 1930-1943
  • Alan Lomax, 1935-1969
  • John A. Lomax and Alan Lomax, 1925-1942
  • Alan Lomax and Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter, 1938-1941
