Letters from a Girlhood Friend

Included in this collection are three letters written by a school friend of Rosa Parks, identified in the ‎letters only by her first name: “Galatas.” She has more recently been identified as Galatas Jack. Rosa ‎and Galatas had probably been schoolmates at Montgomery Industrial School for Girls before Galatas ‎moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to live with an aunt and attend school. Although no letters are ‎included from Rosa, the letters from Galatas provide a vivid sense of Rosa as a young woman. Dated ‎between 1928 and 1932, the letters discuss academic studies and mutual friends. The last letter ‎mentions Rosa’s upcoming engagement.
