Letters from a Girlhood Friend
Included in this collection are three letters written by a school friend of Rosa Parks, identified in the letters only by her first name: “Galatas.” She has more recently been identified as Galatas Jack. Rosa and Galatas had probably been schoolmates at Montgomery Industrial School for Girls before Galatas moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to live with an aunt and attend school. Although no letters are included from Rosa, the letters from Galatas provide a vivid sense of Rosa as a young woman. Dated between 1928 and 1932, the letters discuss academic studies and mutual friends. The last letter mentions Rosa’s upcoming engagement.
