President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was a prolific writer of books, articles, and especially letters, and received as much mail as he sent. His correspondents ranged from heads of states to average Americans, and covered a wide range of topics. Discover what Roosevelt and his correspondents had to say about the issues of their day.

By 1911, T. R. had become more liberal and reformist in his policy ideas, which reflected a growing ideological divide within the Republican Party. But the ex-president struggled to find his professional and political footing outside of the spotlight. Having been hired by The Outlook in 1909, T. R. promoted his “New Nationalism” through editorial columns and a speaking tour in the western U.S. in the spring.
