President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was a prolific writer of books, articles, and especially letters, and received as much mail as he sent. His correspondents ranged from heads of states to average Americans, and covered a wide range of topics. Discover what Roosevelt and his correspondents had to say about the issues of their day.

As the presidential election year of 1912 began, T. R. wavered on his possible candidacy. In February he indicated his willingness to run for reelection if nominated by the Republican Party. “My hat is in the ring,” he declared. As voting began in the state primaries, Republicans were forced to choose between the progressive candidate T. R. or the conservative choice of Taft. This divide proved increasingly difficult for friends loyal to both T. R. and Taft.
