File 89, March 1913-April 1913
Suffragists planned the first national suffrage parade for March 3, 1913, in Washington, D.C., on the eve of President Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. The parade put the president-elect and Congress on notice that some suffragists would hold the Democratic Party responsible if it failed to pass a federal women’s suffrage amendment, often referred to as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Many of the documents in this section of file 89 reflect American’s various viewpoints on and heightened awareness of the issue of women’s suffrage in the weeks following the parade.
